The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Mercenaries
Wi Chen was born in Gansu Province to a minor civil service official and his wife. Aged two, he was requisition by the Chinese government and handed over to a facility deep in Xinjiang that was focusing on expanding the human brain. Wi Chen was raised on a diet of chemicals and gene therapy that enhanced a specific area of his mind, and his training was devoted to that area: linguistics. Wi Chen can converse fluently in thirty-two languages and dialects, and can indentify more than a hundred more. His natural voice is flat and inflectionless, without a trace of a Chinese accent. Quiet and unemotional, Wi Chen learned fierce emotional control at the facility. He was deployed at the conclusion of his training as an interpreter aboard the Chinese frigate Xiangfan, which was sunk by the American SSN USS Hawaii during the Weekend War. He, along with four other survivors, were plucked from the water by the LCS Undying, at the time the League’s only warship, which had been dragged into the Weekend War by misplaced patriotism and a hefty pile of cash. Realising the massive potential of Wi Chen, he was recruited to the League over the screaming protests of the Chinese. To this day, his recruitment by the League is seen as an act against the People’s Republic, which is why the Chinese have never employed the League.
